Retaining walls are not only a functional landscaping feature but also an aesthetic one. These features have many functions including preventing the loss of soil, creating functional spaces on sloping land as well as ensuring safety. These features also contribute to the aesthetics of the space. There are different types of retaining wall blocks and different retaining wall types. Below, we take a look at some types of retaining walls and how they are installed.
Different Types of Retaining Walls
Gravity wall
This is the basic retaining wall. It relies on the setback of the wall, the weight of the blocks, their connections, and the depth to which they are buried within the ground to hold the soil back. When all the conditions are right and the wall is built within the recommended limits for height (not more than 3 feet), these features are able to rely solely on their embedded depth and weight to resist lateral pressure.
These features are constructed free of mortar. The types of retaining blocks are lipped to permit interconnection. This construction style permits drainage of water from the soil and thus prevents the buildup of great hydrostatic loads. They are, however, only suitable for non-critical applications. The blocks can also be connected using specialized pins.
Freestanding walls
These walls are commonly used for the division or decoration of yards. The types of landscaping blocks used are regular wall blocks. The units are stacked vertically to create the wall. The blocks may be connected using masonry adhesive, specialized pins, gravity, or a combination of two or all of these methods. These features are not strong. They are not able to withstand lateral forces. They are therefore not used to hold back soil. Their function is more aesthetic.
Reinforced structural walls
These are the ultimate landscaping features. They range between 3 and 50 feet in height. They are designed to hold back significant volumes of soil. They can be used on large slopes of land to prevent soil movement. They are constructed using blocks along with soil reinforcement products. Soil reinforcement products are used to create larger structures. They include geo-grids, galvanized steel grid reinforcing, and earth anchors. When these walls are well designed and the right combination of engineered products is used, these types of walls are able to support a great deal of earth pressure and loads.
What Type of Wall is Best For You?
Not sure which wall would work best for you? There are several factors to consider when making this decision. These include:
The function of the wall
Are you installing a retaining wall purely for its aesthetic value or for its structural properties? Do you need the structure to hold back soil on a slope? Will you construct the structure to simply divide the space? Choose a wall type that can help you meet your goal.
The site conditions
It is essential to choose a wall that can meet your requirements based on the conditions on your site. Consider factors such as the angle of the slope of the land, the soil type, drainage requirements, seismic forces, and more.
Aesthetic value
These structures are both functional and aesthetic. The right wall will contribute greatly to the visual appeal of your property. Consider factors such as your tastes and preferences as well as the space available. You can incorporate blocks of different patterns, textures, and colors to create a unique and appealing design.
